The grounds of the Danger Point Lighthouse near Gansbaai will be open to the public on Saturday, 30 April 2022; Sunday, 1 May 2022 and Monday, 2 May 2022 from 10:00 - 15:00.

At this stage there will be no access allowed to the top of the Danger Point Lighthouse, only the bottom of the tower will be accessible. 

This is a temporary arrangement which will become permanent once the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and other relevant administrative matters are finalised between Transnet National Ports Authority (to whom the property belongs), the Overstrand Municipality and Gansbaai Tourism.

In the continued effort to curb crime in the Overstrand and increase law enforcement visibility, the Deputy Mayor of Overstrand Municipality, councillor Lindile Ntsabo, launched Operation Lungisa on 21 April 2022.

As part of phase 1 of the launch, the Deputy Mayor, who is also the responsible Mayoral Committee Member for Crime Prevention in the Overstrand, together with Disaster Management and other role players such as the South African Police Service (SAPS), conducted an inspection of various businesses in Zwelihle.

Perishable items with expired sell-by dates were discovered in may shops. Owners were requested to remove the items from the shelves and dispose of them in a suitable manner.

Future operations will include the Overberg District Municipality’s Health Department addressing the issue in accordance with legislation.

The Census 2022 deadline for the Western Cape has been moved to the end of this month.

This is according to Statistics SA who revealed that the Western Cape is significantly behind schedule in data collection compared to the rest of the country.

The country’s data collection is at 83,8%, while the Western Cape stands at 49%.

Stats SA has dispatched 2 000 additional field workers from other provinces to the Western Cape and data collection has been extended until 30 April 2022 in the Western Cape.

The public might have noticed the presence of Special Investigating Unit (SIU) officials in Hermanus over the last few days.

President Cyril Ramaphosa authorised the SIU to conduct an investigation in connection with the affairs of the Overstrand Municipality, specifically related to complaints received in regard to the housing division within the municipality in terms of Proclamation No. R43 of 2022, as published in Government Gazette No. 45617 dated 10 December 2021. 

The SIU has started with physical interviews of the relevant members of the public and municipal officials on Sunday, 17 April 2022, after all relevant information was provided to them upon their request.

Overstrand Municipality is calling on all residents in the Overstrand to participate in the annual City Nature Challenge (CNC) for the first time, after a successful Great Southern Bioblitz last year where we came second in the southern hemisphere.

The Challenge takes place in two parts: From April 29 – May 2 participants can take pictures of plants, animals, marine life, fungi, etc within the Overstrand.  Then, from April 29 – 8 May 2022, uploading and identification of these photos will take place.

All you need to do, is to register on the iNaturalist app (download from iNaturalist.org), grab your cellphone or camera and begin taking photos of birds, insects, plants and other life (other than humans or pets) in your neighbourhood, on the beach and in mountains and upload them on the database.
