The Overstrand municipality has established a youth desk to communicate and engage with the youth about youth issues, initiatives and opportunities. To ensure that the youth desk provide a service that is relevant to you as a youth we need your assistance.

If you are between the ages of 16 and 35 years we would like you to give your input and ideas on:

•    information or services you would like from a youth desk;
•    youth needs in your area;
•    training needs;
•    skills development;
•    how to tackle unemployment in the Overstrand; or
•    any other matters you deem important.

Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, extended her congratulations to Jolyn Phillips who received the Kunste Onbeperk Prize for a Young Voice at this year’s Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK).

Jolyn was debuting her first play, based on her award-winning book, Bientang, at the KKNK. She has written the script, stars in it, produced it and contributed to the music with the assistance from Frazer Barry, Deniel Barry (who lives in Kleinmond) and Charlton George.

Jolyn, who matriculated at Hoërskool Emil Weder and originally from Gansbaai, is currently lecturing at the University of Johannesburg.

Bientang: Bloedspoor/!nau will also be showcased at the Suidooster Festival later this year.

Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, and fellow councillors joined the Speaker of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, Masizole Mnqasela as Constituency head of the Overstrand Municipal area, on their third Anti-Gender Based Violence (GBV) march in Hermanus, for a bid to call for justice for Sisipho Mayile.

Sisipho, a matric student at Qhayiya Secondary School in Zwelihle, went missing on 16 January, and her body was found in the bushes near Camphill bridge in Hermanus on 25 January.

“I am calling on communities across the Province to stand up and speak out against all forms of GBV and domestic violence. If we keep silent, the war will continue to be waged as frustrations of lockdown and alcohol abuse rise to exacerbate the crises," said Speaker Mnqasela.

Law Enforcement officers of the Overstrand K9 unit and Task Team, in partnership with the Gansbaai Police, found 200 Mandrax tablets at a house in Gansbaai earlier today, Monday 4 April 2022.

The estimated street value of the drugs is R20 000.

A man and women were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs.


Overstrand Municipality is calling on residents to continue using water in a responsible manner in order to avoid future water shortages.

Although there are currently no formal water restrictions in the Overstrand, the Municipality has a permanent provision that prohibits residents from irrigating gardens between 09:00 - 17:00 in order to prevent unnecessary loss of water through evaporation as per the water services by-law no. 46.(1).

The Overstrand receives its water from six dams and several springs, boreholes and rivers.

The De Bos Dam in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, is the Greater Hermanus’ main water source apart from the 12 boreholes.
