The first baboon-proof public wheelie bin was installed earlier today along the beach path close to Aasbankies in Silver Sands, Bettys Bay.

This project is the initiative of Biosphere Living, in partnership with the Overstrand Municipality, Betty's Bay Baboon Action Group (BB BAG), the Hangklip-Kleinmond Community and the Overstrand Herald.

The Wheelie bins - purchased by the Overstrand Municipality’s Hangklip-Kleinmond Administration, are retrofitted with an innovative baboon-proof locking mechanism designed and fitted by Bettys Bay local handy-man, Marco Marcovecchio. The locking mechanism makes it impossible for baboons to access waste whilst ensuring it is simple for the public to use.

More baboon-proof wheelie bins will be installed throughout the community. The aim of the project is to ultimately replace all the current, unprotected blue swing bins in public areas across Hangklip-Kleinmond with the baboon-proof bins.

Every October, people all over the world show their support for everyone affected by breast cancer.

Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer for South Africans, with 1 in 25 having a lifetime risk.

Remember that Breast diseases also affect men. So, have yourself checked and learn to recognise warning signs, as early detection improves the chances of successful treatment.

In support of breast cancer awareness, the Hermanus, Hawston and Mount Pleasant Libraries embraced the pink ribbon and the colour pink in their displays.

The displays share valuable information on breast cancer.

Special thanks to Norma Molyneus, a cancer survivor, who visited the Hermanus Library to share her story.

The Municipality issued a media release on 4 October 2021 to confirm the problems that several ratepayers experienced with the September 2021 accounts, specifically with regard to meter readings and the resultant consumption charged on some of these consumer accounts.

The Finance Department is handling all the queries received regarding the unusually high municipal accounts.

Queries received that needed adjustments were attended to promptly.

Onrus Caravan Park has been voted as the number two top camping site by Die Burger annual readers’ choice competition.

Readers were asked to vote for their favourite companies in 95 different categories. Hartenbos ATKV was the winner in the camping category with Yzerfontein Karavaanpark in the third place.

The Onrus Caravan Park team would like to thank all of the regular campers who voted for them. “We feel honoured to be in such great company,” they said. The team extended their congratulations to fellow caravan parks in the Western Cape.

The Onrus Caravan Park is uniquely situated on the coast, with only a cliff path between campers and the ocean.

The level, grassed stands are protected from the sea breezes by milk wood trees. All stands have braai facilities (no need to bring a grid!) and most stands have electricity. The ablution blocks are clean, have hot water and are disabled-friendly.
