Gansbaai Academia hosted their Sports Gala Awards on 1 September 2022 to honour the accomplishments and successes of their learner-athletes.

Amongst the guests who attended the event was Councillor Elnora Gillion, Mayco Member of Local Economic Development.

She said it was good to see the athletes, teachers and coaches of multiple sporting codes in person again after a two-year hiatus due to Covid.

“Gansbaai Academia is blessed with highly talented learners and motivated teachers and coaches, and we are grateful that sports are now back in full swing.”

Overstrand Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, received recognition for her leadership at the South African Local Government Association’s (SALGA) Women Municipal Leadership Excellence Awards event that was held on 25 August 2022 in Johannesburg.

Ward 10 Councillor, Theresa Els, received the certificate on behalf of the Mayor as the representative Women Commissioner of Overstrand Municipality and Overberg District Municipality. This award also pays tribute to women leaders who have achieved clean audits and celebrates their contribution to financial governance and accomplishments as a female mayor.

Overstrand Municipality is one of the 13 female-led municipalities awarded a clean audit by the Auditor General in terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act. In addition to the above, special mention was made of the top three performing municipalities in the country for consistent clean audits of more than five consecutive years.

Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, made an oversight safety visit on Monday, 5 September 2022 to police stations in the Overstrand to familiarise himself with matters relating to his portfolio. He was appointed to this position just over 130 days ago.

There to welcome him to our area, was Deputy Mayor and Mayco Member of Protection Services, Lindile Ntsabo, who said he is pleased that the Minister wants to assure himself of the realities that our police stations are facing and to find out first-hand what kind of support the police stations need.

Hermanus Station Commander, Colonel Luthando Nosilela showed the Minister around the station and briefly discussed safety and security highlights as well as challenges faced by his station.

Hermanus Community Day Centre (CDC) in Swartdam Road: Tuesday, Thursday open from 08:30 - 15:00

Kleinmond Proteadorp Community Hall: Tuesday open from 08:30 - 15:00

Gansbaai Pretorius Hall (NG Kerk): Wednesday open from 09:00 - 15:00

Overstrand Municipality scooped this year’s National Arbour City Award for local municipalities. The awards event took place in Mbombela on 1 September 2022 to coincided with the launch of Arbour Month.

Cllr Ronald Nutt, Mayco Member of Community Services and horticulturist, Lauren Rainbird, accepted the award on behalf of the Municipality. Also in attendance were Deputy Mayor Lindile Ntsabo and the Deputy Director of Community Services, Theo Steenberg.

To win, municipalities had to submit a portfolio of evidence fulfilling a number of requirements.

The judging criteria focused on some the following aspects: Greening policy and strategy, the development and conservation of greenbelts, natural assets, greening in (townships), low-income cost housing, Management and maintenance operations, Tree administration, Programmes on eradication of undesirable alien invasive, Prevention of disastrous occurrences like wild-fires, Resource allocation to greening and related functions.
