We are aware of a WhatsApp message doing the rounds regarding an outbreak of swine fever in the Overstrand.

The content of this message is misleading as we have checked with the Western Cape Department of Health who confirmed that there is no confirmed cases of swine fever in the Overstrand area. ‬‬‬

The public is requested to first verify information before distributing unconfirmed information as it leads to unnecessary panic and distress.

Overstrand Municipality's Local Economic Department and partners are gearing up for the launch of the New Harbour Market this Saturday, 1 October 2022.

The market will be operating every Saturday in the Multi-Purpose Centre (the old Lusitania building) at the New Harbour in Westcliff, Hermanus, from 10:00 and 15:00.

At the market you will find:

Overstrand Municipal Council resolved at an ordinary council meeting held on 28 September 2022, that the Land Availability Agreement (LAA) between itself and the Provincial Department of Human Settlements (DoHS) be ceased. 

This decision was prompted by a meeting between Minister Tertuis Simmers and Mayor Rabie held on 12 September 2022 where agreement was reached owing to a number of key factors, including the appointment of a turn key implementing agent to manage the project until completion. 

The latter decision was further supported by the fact that the Provincial Government is currently restructuring its departments and Human Settlements will become part of the new Department of Infrastructure.

Honouring her pledge to plant trees across the Overstrand, Mayor Annelie Rabie and her Council planted a white pear tree next to the additional court in Hermanus to end off Arbour Month.

Mayco member for Community Services, Cllr Ronald Nutt, made use of the opportunity to hand over the Arbour City Award certificate and trophy the Municipality won at the beginning of the month.

If anyone in the community planted trees during Arbour Month and would like to be counted towards the end goal of the Government’s 10 million tree programme, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  (for the attention of Lauren Rainbird) stating the name of the tree and the number of trees that were planted.

Remember that the maintenance of the trees is vital, and the new trees need regular watering - especially in our hot summer months.

The Overstrand Council appointed Municipal Manager, Dean O’Neill, for a further term during a Special Council meeting held on Tuesday, 20 September 2022.

Mr O’Neill was appointed Municipal Manager of Overstrand since 1 November 2020 and his current contract is ending in October 2022. In terms of the Municipal Systems Act, the employment contract for a Municipal Manager must be for a fixed term to a maximum of five years but may not exceed a period of one year after the election of a new Council
