Pensioners and disabled persons have until 30 November 2020 to submit their applications for a rebate on property rates to Overstrand's Rates and Data Control Office.

The decision to temporarily extend the last receipt date for applications for rebates from 30 September 2020 to 30 November 2020 was made during a virtual Council meeting held on Wednesday 29 July 2020, to afford ratepayers more time to acquire and submit the necessary documentation required for the approval of applications.

Retired and Disabled persons qualify for special rebates on property rates, according to their total gross monthly household income.

A rebate will be considered if:

As per current lock down Level 3 Advanced stipulations, Overstrand is managed as a hotspot area for COVID-19 infections and all Overstrand public libraries will remain closed until further notice.

We need to continue to minimise movement and interaction, where possible.

Most of the libraries in the Western Cape intend to open their libraries at the end of August or early September.

Overstrand Municipality will re-asses the library situation at the end of 31 July 2020.

Nedbank Hermanus has partnered with Voëlklip’s OK MiniMark to help residents who have had to quarantine or self-isolate themselves due to either exposure to or a positive test for COVID-19.

On Thursday, 16 July 2020, the Overstrand COVID-19 Disaster Management team received a donation of 120 boxes pre-packed with non-perishable food items such as canned goods and beans etc.  Also included as part of the donation (and neatly wrapped), were fresh vegetables that provides a perfect opportunity to assist with the nutritional needs of COVID-affected patients.

“We hope this food makes their isolation and recovery feel a bit less daunting,” said Werner van der Merwe, business banking manager of Nedbank Hermanus.

Lester Smith, Senior Manager: Fire and Rescue, Disaster Management and Security Services, once again thanked every individual, organisation and business who is still willing to give of their time or money.

He confirmed that ward councillors are assisting the Overstrand Disaster Management Centre in identifying the most vulnerable households in quarantine who will receive these parcels.

There is some confusion regarding the different electricity tariffs applicable to municipal consumers.

Ratepayers will receive an account statement once a month, inclusive of all relevant charges for services that might be applicable to a particular property.

A basic charge for electricity forms part of the electricity tariff structure because the costs in rendering the service must be recouped. The basic charge therefore includes fixed and overhead costs as well as the capital costs for replacement/renewal of electricity infrastructure. The basic charge is applicable on vacant erven as well, as infrastructure coverage has been put in place and the service is readily available.
