The area between the Cenotaph War Memorial and Gearing’s Point at the Old Harbour in Hermanus, seems to be the dumping site of choice these days.

Household garbage was cleared from this popular tourism area earlier in the week.

Please, THINK BEFORE YOU DUMP. Let’s keep our neighbourhoods clean, green, safe and healthy.

The problem is, however, not limited to this area. 

Solid waste officials said littering and illegal dumping of garden and household refuse happens in many areas of the Municipality and is difficult to enforce “unless we catch somebody in the act”.

Ward 3 Councillor Kari Brice and Overstrand’s horticulturist Lauren Rainbird, as well as Hermanus residents Melanie Moore, Carol Carver and Gibson Kadango, celebrated Arbour Month with the planting of three White Pear trees (Apodytes Dimidiata) at the Hermanus Cemetery recently.

Melanie Moore and her family partnered with the Overstrand Municipality several years ago, to beautify the cemetery, which includes beautifying the unmarked graves and planting trees.

”Heartfelt appreciation is extended to Melanie for highlighting the plight of the Hermanus Cemetery and not just bringing it to my attention, but also being instrumental in creating an extremely successful public-private working relationship,” said Cllr Brice.

Storm water upgrades in Main Road, Marine Drive and High Street, as well as in Mimosa and Prelliwitz Streets in the Industrial Area are on track and progress is currently in line with the planned construction programme.

No significant challenges have been experienced by the contractor to date.

The anticipated completion date for this project is 30 April 2021.

Phase 1 - Area 1 (Marine Drive and Parking)

• Construction on Marine Drive are 90% completed and the parking area is open for vehicle parking. Pedestrian access and movement is possible.
