A bryde’s whale washed up on the rocks close to Schulphoek after its carcass was spotted floating in the water near Hermanus Beach Club earlier this morning, 17 May 2023.

Overstrand Deputy Mayor, Cllr Lindile Ntsabo, warned members of the public not to eat the meat as it is unknown why the whale died.

He said apart from the concerns around the reasons why, the meat and blubber are rotten, and people can get food poisoning.

•    Scientists from the Overberg Stranding Network could not confirm the cause of death and unfortunately there is not much left for sampling.

Overstrand Municipality has officially been rated as the best municipality in the Western Cape followed by Swartland and Drakenstein Municipalities jointly in second place, and a shared third place by the West Coast District and Cape Agulhas Municipalities.

The Service Excellence Awards Ceremony was hosted by the Premier of the Western Cape and took place on Friday, 12 May 2023, in Cape Town.

The Best Municipality Category recognises municipalities who demonstrate commitment to service delivery, good government principles and citizen-centricity (meaning transparent, accessible and responsive).

Overstrand Municipality recently received a grant of R6.7 million from the Western Cape Department of Local Government to procure and install backup generators to keep additional critical water and wastewater facilities running during load shedding.

“This move reflects the urgency that is desperately needed to address the knock-on effects of relentless power cuts on essential basic services. We cannot allow our citizens to suffer any further. We must act to urgently stabilise municipal services such as water supply, wastewater treatment and sewerage infrastructure for our citizens.

“Our government is working very hard on a number of medium to longer-term strategies to respond to this crisis, but we recognise our responsibility to intervene now where we can.

Agricultural properties will be levied at the “FARMS” tariff, subject to the owner/farmer providing the Municipality with proof that the property is used for bona fide farming purposes.

Bona fide farming means that agricultural land is used primarily for agricultural purposes.

Overstrand Municipality requires a declaration from the owner/farmer as evidence of every farm/portion. Each portion should be on a separate application.
