A hearty welcome awaited three cyclists from Outshoorn, Vussi Marenene, Neels Terblance and Pieter Marais at Gearing's Point in Hermanus on 8 September 2023, ending Day 5 of the Sea-Battical Paracycle Tour that started on Monday in Mossel Bay.

With 327km of cycling done and dusted for the week, hand cyclist Vusi said “reaching Hermanus is accompanied by relief that the pain is over, but also a huge sense of satisfaction”.

Vussi, a professional cyclist, was hit by a bakkie in February 2022 and the accident left him in a wheelchair.

He told Overstrand Deputy Mayor, Lindile Ntsabo, that he not only wants to raise funds to hand cycle on an international level but uses the Sea-Battical tour as opportunity to constantly raise awareness of paracycling.

The second day of the Overstrand Tourism indaba started with a packed auditorium on Thursday, 7 September in Hermanus.

The event formed part of the Overstrand Municipality’s drive to develop a tourism strategy that speaks to what the industry wants and not what the Municipality considers to be priorities.

Addressing the audience, Councillor Clinton Lerm, Mayoral Committee Member for Investment, Infrastructure and Tourism, spoke about the planned role and vision of the Overstrand Tourism Department.

To date, 3 217 applications have been received from indigent households across the Overstrand of which 152 forms were incomplete with outstanding documentation and incorrect information. 

The approved indigent applications total 2 818 with 247 new applications received during the week.

In an attempt to widen the scope for support to needy households, Overstrand Municipal officials will be available on the following Saturdays to help individuals to register for Indigent Subsidy:

  • 9 September 2023: Moffat Hall in Mt Pleasant
  • 9 and 23 September 2023: Proteadorp Community Hall
  • 16 & 23 September 2023: Zwelihle Community Hal
  • 16 September 2023: Thusong Hawston

 

As of 6 September 2023, Gansbaai Electrical Services is operating from new premises.
