August is women’s month and the moving performances by local artists and dancers set the stage for the second Inspirational Women’s Day event held in Hermanus on Saturday, 19 August 2023.

This breakfast morning affords the Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, the opportunity to pay tribute to unsung heroines of our area who all play an important role in the lives of others and who are using their talents and skills in various ways to the greater benefit of their communities.

In her address, Mayor Rabie said: “Today we want to salute you for reaching out and supporting one another as mothers, sisters, grandmothers, friends, home-makers or working women”.

Overstrand Municipality has set the benchmark for the best practice in waste management in the Western Cape after being named the winner of the 2022 Municipal Waste Management evaluation award.

The 2nd place went to Stellenbosch Municipality and Saldanha Municipality secured 3rd place.

The Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP) awards ceremony was held on 18 Augusts 2023 at the 55th Western Cape Waste Management Officers Forum in Bredasdorp.

The award aimed to encourage waste planning and sustainability of service rendered in order to promote a healthy environment, as well as green and clean towns in municipal areas.

Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, expressed sadness and shock at the death of Dr Lee-Anne McKinnell who passed away on Saturday after a short illness.

Dr Lee-Anne McKinnell was the Managing Director or SANSA Space Science and achieved remarkable milestones during her 12 years as an executive.

The Space Weather Project was her crowning achievement during her distinguished career as a researcher, SANSA executive, space weather advocate and custodian of this unique facility which she loved and is now a National Key Point, thanks to her continued efforts to protect the site.

Dr McKinnell served on a number of international committees and working groups ensuring Africa’s interests are maintained in the field of space science and related technology.

To date, 2 776 applications have been received from indigent households across the Overstrand of which 146 forms were incomplete with outstanding documentation and incorrect information.

The approved indigent applications total 2 192 and the 50 units of free electricity were given to the relevant households. The relevant rebates (free basic services) will also be backdated for June, July and August, where applicable.

Steady progress is being made with the backlog, which is down to 91 forms with 347 new applications received during the week.
