The Mother City came alive on Saturday night (17 March) during the Cape Town Carnival when thousands of spectators lined the Fan Walk in Green Point to be part of the annual street festival parade.

As tradition would have it, the City of Cape Town paid tribute to firefighters for their dedication and the many long hours of hard work they put in while combatting fires.

Not all Overstrand firefighters could be there as many were on standby, but those who did manage to honour the Hero’s Walk thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, sometimes it also takes a village to protect one.

With this in mind, the innovative Walking Bus Initiative was re-launched in Kleinmond on Monday 19 March 2018 by Minister Dan Plato and the Department of Community Safety. Overstrand’s Executive Mayor, Ald Dudley Coetzee also attended the launch.

The initiative would ensure that pupils of Kleinmond Primary arrive at school and return home safely.

Explaining how it works, Ward 9 Councillor Grant Cohen said, "the ‘walking bus’ will see parents or other volunteers forming the ‘drivers’ of the ‘bus’ – ‘picking up’ children along the way to and from school – to help improve the safety of learners and ensuring that they cross roads safely”.

According to him, perpetrators of crime and bullies tend to keep a low profile while the walking bus members are within close proximity.

‘WATER IS LIFE’ will be the theme for National Water Week from 17 – 23 March.

Various programmes with a water conservation theme will be held in communities and at schools to teach and inform the public about the importance of water and how we can save the resource wisely during the next two weeks.

It was, therefore, fitting that the Hermanus Business Chamber invited its members to discuss the greater scale of the Cape Town water crisis and how it affects the tourism in the Overberg region under the topic: the Crucial issue of Water Management during its meeting on 14 March,

Held at Arabella Hotel & Spa, speakers from the Western Cape Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Fedhasa (The Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa) formed part of the discussion.  Also present was Overstrand Executive Mayor Ald Dudley Coetzee and Municipal Manager Coenie Groenewald.

In his presentation on the water situation in the Overstrand, Mayor Ald Dudley Coetzee emphasised that water is a scarce resource which has to be carefully managed going forward.

Call for comments on the draft policy relating to STREET NAMING AND NUMBERING and draft NAMING POLICY.

Street naming and numbering usually takes place as part of the subdivision and/or development approval process as a matter of course.

The purpose of this policy is to set minimum standards and clear procedures.

  • Names should be in keeping with the theme of surrounding streets when falling within an existing suburb.
  • The length of a name should preferably be limited to what can practically be accommodated on name boards and maps, which are usually no more than 20 characters.
