All fireworks have been banned throughout the Overstrand this summer due to the drought and very high fire risk.
The public is thus alerted to this fact and to any illegal sale of fireworks.  Children under the age of 14 may not be charged under the Criminal Procedure Act.

It is not possible for any informal sale of fireworks (hawkers, roadside or any open-air sellers) to conform with the conditions of the Explosives Act and it is therefore imperative that sellers of fireworks are reported to the SAPS as quickly as possible.

The Explosives Act is enforced by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and not by the Municipality. However, when Law Enforcement receives a complaint, they will attend to it. Phone them on 028 313 8996.

Please report any offences to your nearest SAPS.

The festive season in Kleinmond traditionally begins in the second week of December when the ‘Lights on Main’ are switched on.

This annual event kicked off on Monday, 11 December, in the early evening as usual - with food stalls and live entertainment from the Handevat Marimba Band who delivered a wonderful medley of Christmas carols, campfire songs and folk tunes.

In her address, Cllr Elnora Gillion called on the public to let the spirit of Christmas be their guide this holiday season.  “As we celebrate the birth of our Lord, I pray that the light of kindness and hope be reborn in you. Peace and goodwill to you and your loved ones this Christmas season”.

Residents and visitors were further urged to be thankful, never forget the past and trust the future.

Given that hot, windy and dry weather conditions are to prevail for the foreseeable future, the risk of runaway veld fires is greater than ever this year.

Our Fire Brigade is prepared with full-time fire officers in all areas and a large contingent of volunteer fire fighters. Practices are held on a regular basis to prepare our fire fighters, but as the old adage goes: Prevention is better than cure.

Overstrand Fire Chief, Lester Smith, appeals to all residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution in as far as fires are concerned.

In case of an emergency please contact Overstrand Fire, Rescue & Disaster Management on 028 312 2400.

Also, please do report any suspicious activity immediately to your nearest police station or call Overstrand’s Law Enforcement on 028 313 8996 or 028 313 8000/8111.

The Administration of the Overstrand Municipality took note of recent debates in printed and social media as well as e-mails being forwarded from pillar to post regarding the Municipality’s proposed Draft Fernkloof Nature Reserve Integrated Management Plan (IMP).

The IMP will, prior to it being submitted to the Provincial Authorities for final approval, be submitted to the Overstrand Council for consideration. The status of the IMP is that the Administration awaited comments from interested parties, with closing date 30 November 2017, on the content of the IMP and which comments, together with the input from the Administration, will be submitted to the Overstrand Council for consideration.
