After successful negotiations, the Overberg District Municipality (ODM), Overstrand Municipality and Theewaterskloof Municipality signed a Service Level Agreement for the Karwyderskraal Landfill site earlier today, Friday, 6 July 2018.

This Service Level Agreement is for the estimated useful lifespan of the whole Karwyderskraal Landfill site, which is estimated to be 55 years and will commence once the new cell in the Landfill site is completed. 

In terms of the agreement, the ODM will construct a new cell in the Landfill site and maintain the Landfill site to ensure that Overstrand Municipality, Theewaterskloof Municipality and other interested parties and local municipalities in the Overberg Regional District have a facility to dispose of general waste.

According to estimates, the new cell (the fourth one of its kind) will be able to take approximately 200 000 tons of solid waste. At the current growth rate, the new cell will, therefore, take approximately eight years to fill before a new cell will have to be commissioned.

This year, the Hermanus Times Kalfiefees will take place from Wednesday 8 August till Sunday 12 Augustus and, once again, promises to bring top Afrikaans theatre productions to Hermanus.

The festival programme offers something for everyone:

• Lovers of serious theatre can look forward to major drama productions such as “Die reuk van appels” and “Soebatsfontein”.
  
  
• For those who rather prefer a serious laugh, there are excellent comedies such as “Lag ʼn slag” and “Operasie Holm”, while everyone’s favourite comedian, Marc Lottering, promises to have his audience in stitches on Saturday 11 August.
  
  
• Music lovers can look forward to big names such as Coenie de Villiers, Elvis Blue and Danièle Pascal, while the performance by Stellenbosch’s university choir promises to be yet another highlight.

During these June/July school holidays, Fisherhaven residents Natasha and James Bruiners of the Catapult Foundation will, once again, host a three week music winter school boot camp for ± 400 learners from 15 different schools of the Overstrand.

The Boot Camp offers a viable alternative for parents to keep the youth of all ages occupied during the holidays and will culminate in a jazz concert at its conclusion providing a platform for the youngsters to showcase their newly acquired skills.

The programme underpins the Foundation's commitment to ‘music for all’ by introducing learners to the wonderful world of music, art, and culture as an alternative to gangsterism and drugs and other issues which are rife in the Overstand community.

Boisterous energy greeted Overstrand’s Mayor Dudley Coetzee at the opening of the event at Hawston Secondary on Monday, 25 June, when boot campers were treated to a short performance by the band Signature SA and Carmen Exclusive, who will present the music lessons during the Boot Camp. It was clear that a good time was had by all.
