The Women Action Group in Hermanus have used Youth Day celebrations and the long weekend as an opportunity to raise awareness of violence against women and children in the Overstrand and mobilise all communities to stand firm against gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual harassment.

We all need to look at ourselves and say Enough is Enough.

Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, Deputy Mayor, Lindile Ntsabo, members of Hermanus Police and Overstrand Association for Persons with Disabilities (OAPD) joined the community as they walked from the Zwelihle Taxi rank to the Zwelihle Sport Station, where they were met by Overberg District Municipality's Deputy Mayor Archie Klaas for a community dialogue on the matter.

Overstrand’s fire fighters, traffic services, law enforcement officers, Task Team and K9-unit as well as Disaster Management also joined the march to show their support.

It was a busy two days for Overstrand Municipality’s law enforcement team and partners, but a successful one.

Various crime prevention road patrols and joint operation with SAPS, Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and CapeNature were conducted throughout the whole of Overstrand.

On 17 and 18 June 2022, they attended to 313 cases.

Successes of Operation Lungisa included the arrest of 24 wanted suspects for various offences and/or crimes.
60 fines were issued for traffic violations and/or by-law contraventions.

33 warrants of arrest, with a rand value of R51 250, were made for outstanding traffic fines and failing to appear in court.

Two Overstrand baboons were noticed with injuries today, one female in Betty’s Bay with an injury to her hand and another male in Pringle Bay, with an injury to his left inner thigh.

The Betty’s Bay female was monitored closely by the Rangers and she was moving and foraging with reasonable ease. A decision was taken to not bring in a Vet at this stage.

The adult male in Pringle Bay however seemed to be moving slowly and a Vet was called to assess the male.

The Vet assessed the movements and behaviour of the animal and it was found that the male was alert, moving well and foraging. There was no bleeding from the wound and the decision was taken to only monitor his condition for now.

Both animals will be located tomorrow at first light and their condition re-assessed.
