Illegal land invasions are becoming a major concern in the Western Cape and more specifically so in the Overstrand Municipality.

This practice is unacceptable as it impedes proper planning and the provision the basic services. In most instances the invasions are also on land that might not be suitable for settlement.

To mitigate and to prevent any further illegal occupation on municipal land after the lapsing of the Red Ants contract on 30 June 2022, Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, indicated that a strategic decision was taken by Council to not outsource the function again.

The lovely sunny winter’s day on Saturday, 13 August 2022, was met with joy by the spirited women who have positive ‘can do’ attitudes and who go the extra mile. They are the ones on who everyone in their respective communities rely and they attended a special breakfast hosted by Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie and Municipal Council as part of Women’s Month celebrations.

Residents were asked to nominate remarkable women in their organisation or neighbourhood to be honoured at this Inspirational Women’s Day event.

The occasion was officially opened with a prayer by Cllr Ronald Nutt, followed by the lighting of remembrance candles to honour all the mothers and special people in our lives who have passed away; including those who died during the covid pandemic.

“You not only keep the peace but go out of your way to keep everyone safe, and for that we owe you a great deal of gratitude.”

Quite fittingly, Women’s Month kicked off on the 1st of August with Executive Mayor Dr Annelie Rabie welcoming a whole contingent of uniformed women to a special event held in their honour in the Hermanus Auditorium.

Organised by Overstrand Protection Services, female officers representing the SAPS, Correctional Services, Community Policing Forum, Emergency Medical Services and Provincial Road Safety as well as representatives from several government departments and NGOs such as Women in Action attended the event.

In her opening address, Mayor Rabie stated unequivocally that “society should be proud of and respect our women in uniform and value the hard work they do. They are there to help keep the peace and to ensure that everyone, but especially our women and children, are kept safe and sound in communities that show respect for the law and one another.
