On the eve of Africa's Travel Indaba, starting on Monday, Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, said the recent announcement by the South African Reserve Bank to upgrade banknotes and coins for the first in more than 10 years, will be a conversation starter.

Changes include the addition of pictures depicting the 'Big Five', as well as new animals and plants.

Mayor Rabie said she is thrilled to see the Southern Right Whale on the R5 coin and the Cape honey bee replacing the aloe on the 10c pieces

Please ignore the email reminder that your library materials are overdue.

The Operating System of the Library and Information Management System (SLIMS) collapsed in November 2022 and is not working.

Should you have any overdue books and other library material, please return them to your local library as other people would also want to read it. No fines will be charged.

The library staff thanked all patrons for their patience and support. Please feel free to contact your local library for any questions.

4 May is International Firefighters' Day! This day is a special time to honour and recognise the sacrifices made by firefighters to ensure that their communities and environment are protected.

It is also a day to reflect and remember all the fire fighters who have lost their lives - we will be thinking of our colleagues who have lost their lives fighting fires.

That dedication may be in the form of countless hours volunteered over many years, or many selfless years working in the industry. "In all cases, it risks the ultimate sacrifice of a firefighter’s life - and we cannot thank them enough", she said

The Mayor also conveyed her appreciation to their families for allowing them to live their passion.

Another first is that Dr Annelie Rabie in her capacity as Executive Mayor and Chair of the Tourism Portfolio will be accompanying Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill, Overstrand Tourism Manager Frieda Lloyd and Gansbaai Tourism’s Glenda Kitley this time round.

By no means a newcomer to the tourism industry, Mayor Rabie said she is most excited about returning to Durban and picking up some innovative ideas that would benefit Overstrand's offerings and pitching the area as a destination of choice.
