The work on the electrification of Marikana in Zwelihle started the second week in May this year and is progressing well.

This need was identified during 2022, when after a number of transformers in the area had to be replaced due to overloading as a result of the myriad of illegal electricity connections.  The situation was further exacerbated by the tragic death of a toddler who was electrocuted by an illegal connection. 

Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, then come to an agreement with the community to assist the municipality with the safeguarding of its infrastructure and promised that she would actively look for funding to start addressing the electricity backlog here.

Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr. Annelie Rabie, Mayoral Committee Members Lindile Ntsabo, Elnora Gillion, Clinton Lerm, Ronald Nutt and Arnie Africa, as well as the Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill and his Directors will be available to talk to the public about any queries that they may have on Thursday, 1 June 2023.

It will be held at the Gansbaai Tourism Hall from 17:00 - 19:00.

Remember, First Thursdays are not a public feedback meeting, but a great platform for residents to engage in person with the Mayor and to raise issues such as vandalism and cable theft, burst water pipes, plot clearing, building plans approval delays and maintenance and storm water pipe cleaning, etc.

A cold front will set in over the Western Cape by Wednesday evening, 24 May 2023, resulting in cold, windy and rainy weather conditions on Thursday.

Moderate to fresh (17– 35km/h) West to North-Westerly interior winds can be expected ahead of the cold front on Thursday.

Rapid clearing behind the cold front on Friday, 26 May 2023, will lead to mainly fine and cold weather conditions, continuing into Saturday.

On Sunday, 28 May 2023, another cold front is expected to set in over the Western Cape with cloudy, cold, windy and rainy conditions.

Danny Cat (Daantjie Kat), recently paid a visit to Lukhanyo Primary in Zwelihle to demonstrate good road safety habits. He was accompanied by traffic officer Noluthando Kedama from the Overstrand Municipality Traffic Services Department.

The visit was aimed at interacting with the grade R learners to create more awareness towards road safety with the emphasis on pedestrian safety.

The road safety mascot also teaches the children what they should do when doing things like crossing the road.

Morris Tshabalala, principal of Lukhanyo Primary, said it is important to educate children from a young age about road safety because most of them do walk to school and then they have to be aware of their surroundings.
