Overstrand Municipality has an active recycling programme, but it has become apparent that not everyone in the Overstrand is aware of the refuse collection schedule. Rubbish bags are often placed on the sidewalk for days before they are collected on the scheduled collection date.

The municipal solid waste team work to a set schedule and service different areas on different days of the week, picking up household waste and clean recyclables.

The recycle bags are collected on the same day as the general waste is collected and is then transported to the recycling plant where it is sorted and baled. For every clear plastic bag placed out by a household, a new one will be supplied as replacement.

At the Western Cape Government Service Excellence Awards (SEA) event held this evening, 12, May 2023, at Century City Conference Centre. Overstrand Municipality was announced as the category “ Best Municipality” winner.

Well done team Overstrand.

 

Overstrand competed with cities around the world in the City Nature Challenge, to gather the most observations about nature in an effort to help document biodiversity.

The global results of the City Nature Challenge 2023 show that over the four-day competition, the Overstrand collected a grand total of 14 190 observations. Of those observations, a total of 2 002 species have been identified, 397 of which were red-listed plants and animals in the Overstrand. This year, Overstrand boasted 397 identifiers and 191 observers.

“We placed third in Southern Africa, with eThekwini second (15 152 observations) and Cape Town first with a whopping 52 720 observations - placing them third in the world! Overall, the Overstrand is placed 31st in the world,” Sandy Immelman, one of the Overstrand Bioblitzing Facilitators, said.

Africa's Travel Indaba 2023 at Durban's Inkosie Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre officially ended on 11 May 2023, after three days of intense connecting, marketing and networking. 

It is a platform for all tourism players and exhibitors from Africa's 21 countries to showcase their best tourism products and offerings.

Any business wanting to attend the Indaba can do so - as a stand-alone product owner or a collective.

This is the first year that Overstrand Municipality had its own separate stand. In previous years Overstrand was allocated a small desk on the Wesgro stand.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) is warning of rain across the Overberg area on Friday, 12 May 2023. Flooding of roads and settlements can be expected.

They also issued a warning of strong winds and high seas. With these strong winds, there is a good possibility of the uncontrolled spread of any wild fires.
