The long-awaited generator for the Traffic Department in Hermanus has arrived and will be installed today.

This generator will assist the traffic department in avoiding load shedding and power outages.

Open during the week

The traffic offices in Hermanus will be open Mondays - Fridays from 08:00 - 15:15 and alternative Saturdays from 08:30 until 12:00.

The traffic offices in Kleinmond and Gansbaai will be open Mondays - Fridays from 08:00 - 15:15 with a lunch break between 13:00 - 13:45.

  • Kindly note that that the traffic office will only be open today (25 Julie 2023) from 10:00 - 14:00 as the installation will take place from 14:00 onwards.

Mayor Annelie Rabie will continue her First Thursday’s initiative in Betty’s Bay on 3 August 2023 from 17:00 - 19:00.

This will be the first time the event will be held in the Crassula Hall, Betty’s Bay.

She will be accompanied by her Mayoral Committee Members, as well as the Municipal Manager, Dean O'Neill, and all the Directors. 

No appointments are required, and the public will be seen on a first come, first served basis.

Today, 21 July 2023, Overstrand Municipality switched on the electricity to the first 170 households in the Marikana informal settlement in Zwelihle, Hermanus.

The electrification work includes the installation of electric pylons, laying cables, connecting the transformers and providing each household with a pre-paid electricity meter that allows residents to purchase electricity from vendors.

R2 million of own municipal funds and R1 million from the WC Government were made available in January 2023 to kick-start the project.

Before the electrification of the area, it was not uncommon to see power cables running along the ground or creating a web of connections over the community.

Altogether 1 888 property owners from the Overstrand submitted objections to the new valuations of their properties of which 1 197 were upheld and 691 were rejected.

After several inquiries from the public showing how many objections were received per suburb and how many were upheld and were dismissed, the following is reported:

8 objections received, 7 successful, 1 dismissed

BLOMPARK:
5 objections, 1 successful, 4 dismissed

BIRKENHEAD:

2 objections, 2 successful, 0 dismissed

Following the press release of the Schulphoek Action Group (SAG) on 16 July 2023 on the Sandbaai Forum regarding the outcome of a meeting with Overstrand Municipality's Protection Services Directorate, the following concerns are raised.  Firstly, there was only a telephone discussion and no meeting between the parties.

Although they are making some statements that are par for the course in terms of Council’s responsibilities in Schulphoek, from which we never shirked, it would seem that they are claiming the opposite.  

While it is true that there were telephonic discussions between Protection Services Director, Neville Michaels and the chairperson of the Sandbaai Action Group (SAG), it is not true that there was agreement to collaborate to address issues in Schulphoek.
