On Tuesday, 24 May 2016 the Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela and Executive Mayor of the Overstrand Municipality, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie handed over the keys to a group of proud new home owners of the Mount Pleasant and Swartdamweg Site A Housing Project in Hermanus.

For 68-year old Jim Robertson, and his 73-year old wife Sebina, the event marked an end to a wait of almost two decades. An emotional Sebina said, “This is a dream come true. To have a proper roof over our heads and to know it really does belong to us, means so much.”   

A sentiment that was echoed by special needs beneficiary, Clara Mouries (67) who could barely contain her joy. “My prayers have been answered.  After my stroke I struggled, but here I have a bathroom fitted with a rail; the ramp to my door also makes it easier to get around. I’m so proud to have a decent house to call home,” stated the visibly emotional Mouries.  

Having a house to pass down to their children, is what kept the hope of eventually receiving a Government-assisted home alive for long-time Hermanus dwellers, Maria and Daniel Alexander. 

Thursday, 19 April 2016: The learners and educators of The Fynbos Academy could barely contain their excitement at recently being gifted with a first-of-its-kind Trolley Library, filled with a variety of educational material, from benefactor AVBOB.

The specially held handover ceremony that took place at the school’s premises in Papiesvlei, Stanford was well supported and marked by the presence of AVBOB’s Group CEO Frik Rademan, Overstrand’s Executive Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, as well as a number of education luminaries and interested community members.

The generous donation came about after the Mayor informed Rademan of the school’s need for books and educational aids following her visit to the facility early last year.

In his keynote address, Rademan stated, “To date we’ve donated thousands of books and various educational aids to 31 schools, but the Fynbos Academy is the first to receive a Trolley Library - brainchild of our Group Communication Manager, Marius du Plessis – aimed at assisting smaller schools like this.”

Voters have been urged to visit their local electoral commission offices before 17:00 on Monday, 23 May if they want to verify or update their details

Today is the final day for voters to register for the coming local government elections.

Co-operative Governance Minister Des van Rooyen will officially proclaim the 3 August polls, meaning the voters roll will be closed, and no additional registrations will be allowed thereafter.

Once the election is proclaimed no changes to the voters’ roll, including additional registrations or reregistrations, will be accepted.

Voters should visit their local IEC office with an official South African ID document - either a green barcoded ID book, a smartcard ID or a valid temporary identity certificate.
