On Monday, 8 August, Overstrand’s ladies in uniform announced their integrated plan to help put an end to the carnage on our roads and to protect both Overstrand's community and its wildlife. Hosted at the Zwelihle Community Hall, this event was planned to coincide with Women’s Month and was attended by 28 female representatives of Overstrand’s uniformed forces, representing Overstrand Protection Services, Hermanus SAPS, Provincial Traffic Services as well as Marine and Coastal Management.

Given their hectic schedules and workloads, the attendees seldom have the opportunity to socialise and exchange notes. On this occasion, though, they thoroughly enjoyed exchanging their “recipes” for being “bold and beautiful” and for “instilling trust in those they serve by being noble and trusting”. These sentiments were echoed in the closing address delivered by Neville Michaels, Director: Protection Services, who emphasised that female officers should always celebrate the special beauty they, as dedicated women in uniform, are privileged to portray.

Only registered voters on the voters roll of the IEC for the ward where you reside are eligible to vote. 

The registration of organisations, sectors and geographical blocks are also extended until the day of the particular election. 

Last mentioned structures/entities must also mobilise their members to attend the elections. 

Ward Committees will serve the same term as the newly elected municipal council and will be paid for out of pocket expenses.

Despite recent heavy rains, bulk earthworks for the development of the 30 000m² Whale Coast Mall in Sandbaai have been progressing reasonably well.

The developer of the shopping centre, who is also responsible for the upgrading of the local road network in the vicinity of the Mall, says the road works will be completed in a number of phases over the next 15 months.

These roads include sections of Sandbaai Main Road, Bergsig Street and Schulphoek Road. The first phase (phase 1A) will be to upgrade Sandbaai Main Road from Agrimark to Bergsig Street.

The developer appointed the contractor for the road works on Friday, 29 July 2016. Construction of phase 1A is due to start on Wednesday, 10 August 2016, or shortly thereafter, depending on the results of detail site investigations to be done during the next few days. The start of this phase was slightly delayed to accommodate the Kalfiefees. This phase is due for completion by November 2016.

During this phase, Sandbaai Main Road will be closed from just south of the Engen filling station exit to Bergsig Street. No traffic or pedestrian movements will be possible on this section of Sandbaai Main Road for the duration of the road works.

“At the start of my tenure I made a pledge and it is one that I live by. Give everything you do, everything you’ve got, every minute, of every day. To that I can say, ‘Mission accomplished’.”  These were the words uttered by Overstrand Executive Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie at the Councillors End-of-Term Farewell Dinner held in the Banqueting Hall of the Overstrand Municipality on Wednesday evening, 27 July 2016.

If the tributes paid to the Mayor by the Speaker, Anton Coetsee, as well as Cllrs Lisel Krige and Michelle Sapepa were anything to go by, then it is clear that there was nothing but high praise for her exemplary work ethic and tremendous passion she applied during her time in office.

What was even more evident was the warmth and love that surrounded the Mayor as many took the opportunity to reminisce and swop anecdotes of shared experiences over the years. Not one to hog the limelight, and true to form, Botha-Guthrie deflected attention from herself to pay homage to her councillors and management team by issuing long-service awards, certificates of appreciation and carefully chosen farewell gifts.
