Overstrand Municipality’s Environment Management Section joined countries from across the world to mark International Coastal Clean-up Day.

The clean-up was on 15 September 2022 and the team cleaned up the beach between Grotto and De Kelders.

A total of 36 bags and two bakkie loads, with a total weight of 427.5 kg, of waste and litter were collected along the 14km of beach to minimise the amount of rubbish in our oceans.

Plastic containers, fibre installation pipes, fishing net and net pieces, kreef and chokka traps, wood pallets, bubble wrap, a 6-man tent and pieces of rope (54 meters long) were picked up.

World Tourism Day on September 27th shines a spotlight on the benefits of tourism. Besides adding economic value to communities, tourism adds social, political, and cultural value.

Overstrand Executive Mayor and Portfolio Chair for Tourism, Dr Annelie Rabie, encourages residents to be a tourist in their neighbourhoods today.

“Take time to walk the coastal paths, watch the whales from the cliffs or explore some of the many quaint shops”.

Tourism’s role in strengthening the Overstand’s economy is clear with a number of passionate local role players making a difference through the jobs they create, and the creative thinking applied to serve this year’s World Tourism Day theme of “Rethinking Tourism”.

Overstrand Municipality will host the Boland Rugby Club in their opening fixture of the Mayoral Cup regional rugby challenge this Saturday, 24 September 2022, at the Hawston Sports Grounds.

Theewaterskloof will take on Overstrand teams at their home turf.

The under-20 men’s team will play in the curtain raiser at 12:00, the men’s senior B-team at 13:00, the women’s team at 14:45 and the last game (men’s senior A-team) will start at 16:00.

We look forward to this tournament and would like to wish all teams well - give your best and do so in the spirit of sportsmanship.

South Africans celebrate their diversity of cultures, beliefs and traditions on Heritage Day, alongside tourism month.

So, before you pull out the tongs and get the braai going over the weekend, do something different and become a tourist in your own town and enjoy the abundance of natural heritage Overstrand has to offer.

Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, added her voice to that of Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, to oppose Eskom's proposed 32% tariff hike for next year.

On the last day of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) public hearings, Mayor Hill-Lewis stated that if granted, the standard Eskom tariff would rise by more than 32% (or to 172.6c/kWh) on 1 April 2023.

Mayor Rabie said that this will place further financial burdens on the already ailing local economy and on residents within the Overstrand who are struggling to make ends meet under the rising cost of living.

“Some residents are increasingly finding the municipal services tariffs unaffordable and increases above inflation should be avoided at all costs,” she added.
