The Overstrand Municipality is aware of a number of individuals that are currently driving the issue of the latest general property valuations and making assumptions that it would result in exorbitant increases in the rates and taxes of individual households.

It is true that property values have increased substantially since the last general valuation of 2015.  This was expected judging from the property sales and the prices paid for mentioned properties over this period as valuations are driven by the market. 

Although the Municipal Property Rates Act determines that valuation rolls are valid for four years and can be extended for one year, the Municipality also had to contend with Covid, hence the reason for the longer extension.

The final dress rehearsal of Nicky Spiwo Mlanjana's production ‘Pandemic 2’ was presented in the Hermanus Auditorium last night.

The play was well received by the small, but appreciative, audience.

The group of actors will take part in the annual Western Cape’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) Drama Festival Finale on Saturday, 25 February at 13:00 in the Baxter Theatre, in the hope of winning the competition. Entrance is free.

Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, encouraged the cast (Luveni, Margarete, Nogqiza, Caroline, Wendy, Jukebox and Snokonoko) to believe in their dreams of performing on bigger stages.

Hawston’s Primary School’s Grade 1 - 5 learners were taught about disaster preparedness and what to do in emergency situations on Friday, 17 February 2023 when Overstrand Municipality hosted a Disaster Management Awareness Day in partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) in Hawston.

On delivering his speech, the Overstrand Deputy Mayor, who is also responsible for Protection Services, Cllr Lindile Ntsabo, said children learn by example and it is important that schools and members of the community equip themselves with the knowledge they need in case of an emergency.

Legendary pianist Rocco de Villiers entertained an appreciative audience of almost 120 members from the retirement community of Huis Lettie Theron and Fynbos Park in Hermanus, Negester in Onrus, Lombardi Home Care Centre in Mt Pleasant and Pearly Shell Dienssentrum in Hawston with beautiful music one afternoon recently at the Hermanus Municipal Auditorium.

In his unique style, De Villiers showed how much fun you can have with piano music.

Hermanus Library, in collaboration with other libraries in the area, organised the entertainment as an outreach initiative to its library members.

The second Hermanus Country Market Steering Committee meeting between representatives of the Overstrand Municipality, Hermanus Sports Club and the Hermanus Country Market regarding the issues that hinder trade for the Market took place on 22 February 2023 in Hermanus.

This follows the first technical meeting held on 8 February that kicked-off the negotiations to try and find a way for the continued operation of the Hermanus Country Market as per Mayor Rabie’s commitment at the public meeting of 6 February 2023.

During today’s meeting several matters were discussed, with the main focus being the progress the Hermanus Country Market has made in the required submission of the application to sublease via the Hermanus Sports Club.
