The Overstrand Sport Festival has become one of the highlights on the calendar of sporting enthusiasts in the area, and this year’s event did not disappoint.  On Saturday, 11 March 2017, Overstrand municipal councillors, accompanied by the Executive Mayor Rudolph Smith,  officials, participants and supporters gathered at the Gansbaai Spaces for Sport Facility to enjoy a day of friendly competition in the codes of netball, rugby, soccer and cricket hosted by the Overstrand Municipality.

Once again, the increasingly popular tournament drew a capacity crowd who were treated to a full programme of activities and a spectacular display of the Overstrand’s most prolific sporting talents.

The Festival was opened in exciting, energetic fashion with a march-pass involving the competing teams led by the Blompark Minstrels who entertained spectacularly with their spirited dance moves and lively carnival tunes.

Cllr Riana de Coning then got proceedings underway with a warm welcome, followed by the official opening address by Deputy Mayor Ald Dudley Coetzee where he remarked, “Occasions like this give our communities opportunities to discover and develop their sporting talents. Sport is a great way to bring people together and promote social cohesion.”

The 2016/17 Overstrand Sport Festival (formerly known as The Mayoral Cup) soccer preliminary took place in Stanford on the weekend of 11-12 February 2017. This phase of the competition drew clubs from the various Local Football Associations (LFA’s) in the area, i.e.  Kleinmond, Zwelihle, Gansbaai and Stanford.  The fixtures were further spiced up by the inclusion of a group of Legend teams from the same LFA’s.

Not even the mercury pushing a sweltering 38oC on Saturday, 11 February could dampen the high spirits of the three partaking teams competing in the Group A round-robin leg of the tournament. In the first match between Sweepers FC (Zwelihle) and Kleinmond Eleven Bumpers FC, Sweepers for the better part of the game led by 3-1 before drawing at 3-3; said by an informed source to be due to poor decision making by players at critical phases. Sweepers carried this haphazard form of play into their second match against energetic rookies, Peace Makers (Gansbaai) - after leading  the game by 2 -1, to eventually concede to a disappointing 3-2 loss.

Residents of Mshenxiswa Village, formerly known as the ‘Garden Site’ Housing Project in Zwelihle, celebrated when receiving their long-awaited homes from Overstrand Mayor Rudolph Smith and Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements Bonginkosi Madikizela on 7 February.

As part of a bigger project to upgrade seven informal settlements in Zwelihle, this housing development project consists of 58 high density units and cost R11 million. It is the first high density residential area in the Overstrand and it took 18 months to complete.

The new residents can at last call this 40m² house with open plan kitchen, two bedrooms, bathroom with a yard ‘home’.

Mr. Lusiba Mzwandile applied for a housing subsidy 30 years ago and today, at 71 years old, he became a homeowner for the very first time. “I feel blessed to have a proper roof over my head and to know it belongs to me,” Mzwandile said. He thanked everyone involved in the process for them to receive a house.

“I must commend all those who participated in the pilot District Safety Plan (DSP) that was launched in the Overberg on 1 October 2016 and was carried through to 16 January this year.  Your collective effort over the period has ensured a significant decline in road fatalities in the area, specifically the target top priority categories of pedestrians and children.”

This statement was given by Mr Kenny Africa, Western Cape Traffic Chief and Programme Director at the post-season evaluation of the DSP that was hosted by the Overstrand Municipality at their premises in Hermanus on Friday, 27 January 2017.

Present at the event were representatives of the key role players, i.e. the Overberg municipalities of Cape Agulhas, Theewaterskloof, and Overstrand; as too the SAPS Overberg Cluster.
