Overstrand Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, congratulated Grootbos Private Nature Reserve for being awarded the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa’s highest rating status of 5 Star Premium.

Only four properties received this award of excellence on 18 May at We Are Africa, the gathering of luxury travel brands, in Cape Town.  This grading status that was introduced in 2019 is for properties that exceed the requirements set for 5-star grading.

Mayor Rabie said “this latest recognition celebrates Grootbos’s continuous attempts to innovate and create at the highest standards. This is a remarkable example of how much can be achieved through a committed approach to responsible tourism”.

If you are unable to travel to Hermanus Library due to mobility and transport issues or ill health and you do not have someone to collect books for you, the library can come to you.

The Hermanus Library is offering once a month visits to the local retirement villages and old age homes in and around Hermanus town to exchange books for the residents.

At a Special Council Meeting held on Tuesday, 17 May 2022, Council resolved that the previous Council decision to allow for a technical school in Long Street, Sandbaai be rescinded.

Dr Annelie Rabie indicated that she will approach the Premier of the Western Cape regarding the possibility of moving the school planned on this site, Erf 2825, in Sandbaai to Fisherhaven/Hawston area.

This decision is supported by the fact that a business park development is already under construction in Hawston as well as a need for a similar school for learners from the Hangklip-Kleinmond area.

On 31 March 2022 the National Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) released the first Green Drop report since 2013.

The Green Drop Report provides an analysis of the current state of affairs of wastewater infrastructure and management in the country and also looks at the state of municipal wastewater treatment.

This year, the DWS Green Drop audit teams assessed 995 wastewater systems across 144 municipalities, 12 Department of Public Works branches, and five private and state-owned organisations. 

Wastewater systems with total scores of 90% and higher obtained Green Drop status.

The Overstrand Joint Public Safety Forum was launched at the Overstrand Municipal head office by Deputy Mayor Lindile Ntsabo on Wednesday, 11 May 2022 and was well represented by key role players of SAPS, CPF’s, Neighbourhood Watches, SRA’s, Cape Nature, Dept of Home Affairs, Dept of Education, AfriForum and Overstrand Municipality Protection Services.

This joint integrated effort is to commit ourselves to create a safer Overstrand for all. 

The main objective is to identify hot spot areas and to strategise on how to address the challenges on the table.

It was agreed that:

•    Resources must be shared to combat certain crimes which is on the increase.
•    An intelligence and result driven approach to operations conducted will be maintained.
•    Partnership and one force are needed
